Caves and the Underground

Route 61 in Centralia, Pennsylvania. A fire started at the town dump in 1962, which spread to the coal    
mines. The fire still burns underground today and is expected to continue for 250 years.

Kasukabe, Japan. A 6 km long concrete water tank built 50 meters beneath the surface can  
accommodate 670,000 tons of floodwater and serves to protect Tokyo and surrounding areas.
